Trip Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek takes you into the heart of Nepal’s most remote and culturally rich region, the Kingdom of Lo, which lies along the historic trade route connecting Tibet and India. From the 15th to 17th centuries, traders followed the Kali Gandaki River, exchanging salt and wool for spices and grain, a path that shaped the area's deep-rooted connection to Tibetan Buddhism. Originally part of Tibet, the Kingdom of Lo became part of Nepal in 1790 and remains the country’s sole bastion of traditional Tibetan culture and religion.

Closed to outsiders for many years, especially after the 1960s when eastern Tibetans began fighting Chinese forces, the region only reopened to trekkers in 1991. Today, the Upper Mustang remains a restricted area, with limited permits issued each year for trekking expeditions. Each trek in this sacred and secluded region is escorted by a government liaison officer, ensuring a rare and authentic experience. The trek offers a chance to explore ancient monasteries, caves, and the striking landscape of arid mountains, making it a truly unique destination for adventurous travelers seeking a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
